We\u2019ve been talking about growths and tags.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_Do_We_Actually_Mean_by_Them\"><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What Do We Actually Mean by Them?\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A preauricular tag is a small, benign growth that is usually present from birth, somewhere around the ear. It typically has small deposits of fat or cartilage in it and doesn\u2019t develop further with age. We will discuss only three of the most common ones and how they work.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Surgical_Excision\"><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Surgical Excision:<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The solution most specialists prefer for these tags is excision. During this process, they clean up the area and apply a local anesthetic to numb the area of treatment. Sometimes surgeons prefer using general anesthesia instead, depending on the types of tags that they\u2019re targeting.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After the anesthesia takes effect, surgeons carefully make a cut on the base of the skin tag. The incision is usually a few millimeters below the surface so that no visible bumps are left behind when it heals. The surgeons close the incision with removable or dissolvable sutures and bandage it to avoid any risks of infection.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The treatment typically lasts 10 to 30 minutes, and the wound heals over 7 or 10 days. Usually, if the treatment is done carefully, there\u2019s no scarring.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Non-Surgical_Ligature\"><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Non-Surgical Ligature:<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some patients don\u2019t prefer getting surgery for their tag removal; for such individuals, there\u2019s the option of a non-surgical ligature. However, be warned, this method is not as fast in terms of results. During this treatment, specialists tie the base of the tag with a titanium clip, string, or suture to cut off its blood supply. After 7 or 10 days, typically, the tag dies and falls off on its own.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This treatment may not be as clean as the surgical option. As the tag falls off, it can leave a visible mark or bump behind. However, this is usually very small and inconspicuous.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Cryotherapy\"><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cryotherapy:<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is another non-surgical treatment that is preferred by most specialists. For cryotherapy, they freeze the narrow base of the ear tag with liquid nitrogen. Specialists make sure to numb the area carefully to minimize the patient\u2019s discomfort or pain. This procedure is also not as fast as the surgical treatment. It usually takes a few sessions spaced some days apart to effectively kill the tag. As the growth dies, it falls off on its own, just like it did with ligation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Electrosurgery\"><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Electrosurgery:\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This one is a fast and effective method for preauricular tag removal. During this treatment, the surgeons use a device (normally a small probe) that delivers focused high-frequency electrical energy into the base of the tag. The whole process usually takes around 10 to 20 minutes, and the results are visible almost immediately. The current efficiently cuts and cauterizes the tag\u2019s base to minimize bleeding. However, this method does come with a slight risk of scarring. The texture of these tags is colored or pigmented, and they can be removed easily.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Complex Preauricular Tags:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> These are large and irregularly shaped tags that are associated with congenital anomalies. These tags require extensive treatments and evaluations because they can grow back.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Bilateral Preauricular Tags:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> They occur symmetrically on both sides of the face. Their texture and size vary, and they indicate a genetic predisposition.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Unilateral Preauricular Tags:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> These tags occur on one side and are usually benign.
